From its earliest beginnings up to the present day, linguistics has been closely connected with the domain of education. Ancient grammarians were active as teachers, and grammatical treatises played an important role in the Greek and Roman school curriculum. The Grammaire générale et raisonnée de Port-Royal (1660) is a landmark in the history of linguistics, but is also inspired by the earlier educational activities of one of its authors, Claude Lancelot, who published pedagogical grammars of Latin and Greek. The nineteenth-century invention of syntactic parsing immediately found its way into schoolbooks, and remains the main linguistic topic offered in Dutch secondary education today.
The conference Language and Learning. The history of linguistics in the context of education will focus on the interaction between linguistics as the study of language, and education as the field of language teaching and learning.
